Hugh, age 21. Lt Johnson's B24 Liberator bomber crashed into the side of a mountain in New Guinea in the fall of 1944. He was never seen again. In 2002, two villagers turned in two sets of dogtags and said they had found a plane. Workers identified the whole crew by DNA analysis in Oct 2005. Hugh graduated Geneva County High School in 1941, where he was a forward on the basketball team. His classmates voted him "Most Handsome" his senior year.He had attended Auburn University for a year before to joining the Army Air Corps, was believed to have been shot down on one of his first missions.
Cousin, Fred Byrd, his father, Hugh Johnson Sr. Buried with full military honors including a flyover.
