Elizabeth was the daughter and sole heiress of Sir Thomas Felton of Playford, Suffolk, Baronet and Master to the Household of Queen Anne, by his wife, Lady Elizabeth Howard, daughter and co-heiress of James, 3rd Earl of Suffolk.

When she was eighteen years old, she married John Hervey, 1st Earl of Bristol on July 25, 1625 at Boxted Church, Suffolk. It was John Hervey's second marriage. He loved breeding racehorses, and Ickworth was close to the horse racing hub in Newmarket. Elizabeth preferred the London area, but by all accounts, they had a close and happy marriage. Many of their love letters survive.

John Hervey and Elizabeth Felton Hervey had six daughters and ten sons, including triplets born in 1701. They died at birth. Her children Charles and Henrietta were twins. Countess Elizabeth Hervey was celebrated for her vivaciousness, eccentricity, and love of pleasure and play (Letters of the Countess of Suffolk, 1824.) She was a close friend of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu.

There are several portraits of Lady Elizabeth, Countess of Bristol.
