Mr. Ralph E. Chewning, 92, of Stone Mountain, died Monday, March 20, 2006. Born in Andalusia, AL, on November 4, 1913, Mr. Chewning served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, as a SeaBee seeing active duty in the South Pacific. He worked for the Veterans Administration in New York, Washington D.C. and Atlanta; subsequently for the Department of Housing and Urban Development in Atlanta until retirement in 1973. He was active in the Mountain Shadow Men's Garden Club of Stone Mountain, being the founder, first President, and Club Director. In 1981, he was the President of the Atlanta Division of Men's Garden Clubs of America, and in 1987 the National President of the organization. In May, 1988, he received the MGCA Presidential Citation for "outstanding, longtime, and dedicated service to the MGCA" at the national convention in Asheville, NC. Mr. Chewning was a member of the Lions' Club, and NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees). He was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church. Mr. Chewning is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kathleen (Kay) Coons Chewning of Stone Mountain; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Richard D. Chewning and wife Cathy Chewning of Griffin, Mr. Ralph E. Chewning (Buddy) and wife Karen Chewning of Overland Park, KS; grandchildren, Brandey C. Smith and husband Brian Smith of Overland Park KS, Mary Catherine Chewning of Rome, GA, Andrew C. Chewning of Olathe, KS, Elizabeth Anne Chewning of Griffin, GA, Richard D. Chewning, II of Jekyll Island, GA; and great grandchildren, Aislinn and Madelinn Smith of Kansas.
