“Joe D”, as he was affectionately called, united with Cooper Lewis CME Church of Chatom at an early age. Before his health failed, he held employment with Chevron Service Station and also Sheffield Furniture.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Woodard and Edward Lee Woodard, and a sister, Lucy Abston McCarthy.
He will forever be cherished in the hearts of his devoted family, one son, Gregory (Marivie) Woodard of Silas; one daughter, Lausandera (Wilson) Purifoy of Semmes; mother, Mamie Lee Howell Woodard of Chatom; three sisters, Mary E. Woodard and Betty Woodard, both of Chatom, and Mary W. (Willie James) Evans of Mobile; three brothers, L.C. Woodard of Odyssey, Texas, Eulacee Woodard of Detroit, Mich., and Sammie Woodard of Chatom; two grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Viewing will be Monday, Oct. 13, from 10 until the 11 a.m. service at Cooper Lewis CME Church, 170 Martin Luther King Avenue, Chatom, AL 36518, with the Rev. Hazel Kirksey, pastor and eulogist. Following burial in Hillcrest Cemetery, the family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church.
