She contracted one of the early cases of West Nile Virus in 2002, and was known as an inspirational survivor of the disease. She considered her life a great gift, and maintained a joyful attitude and strong faith, with grace and dignity throughout that time. She had a true enthusiasm for living and was engaged to the very end.
Sandra was born in Atlanta, TX on September 12, 1937, to the late Samuel Chesley and Lurline Johnson Mays. After graduating from Atlanta High School, she attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated from North Texas State University with a BA in Education.
Sandra was a retired elementary school teacher from the Dallas Independent School District. Among her honors was DISD Teacher of the Year for 1983 at John Henry Brown Elementary School. She worked with St. Mark's School of Texas to identify and facilitate gifted DISD students in obtaining scholarships. After her retirement from DISD, she taught for Richardson ISD, and additionally taught members of the community citizenship responsibilities and English.
She is survived by three daughters, six grandchildren a sister and numerous family and friends.
Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M., Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Hanner Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Eric Folkerth officiating.
Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 P.M., Friday, October 10, 2014 at Hanner Funeral Service.
Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 25th at Spring Valley United Methodist Church in Dallas, TX, where she was a long time member.
