Squire was born about 1777, in East Greenwich, RI, Kent County, a son of Yelverton Briggs and Phebe Shippee. Before 1800, his parents and siblings removed to Otsego County, New York, first locating in New Lisbon/Pittsfield. He was married to Desire Wickes also of Rhode Island.

He and Desire had at 11 children: John ( Hartwick/Morris), Riall (Otego), Else (w/o David Thompson-Cherry Valley) , Nancy A. (w/o Henry Cole- Hampden Township, Wisconsin), Frenda (w/o Peter Decker-Cherry Valley), Phoebe (w/o Abram Becker- Quenemo, Kansas), Isaac G. ( Laurens), Mary (w/o Ralph Rudd- Cherry Valley), and Godfrey ( Morris). 2 children are unknown.
