There will be a memorial service in New Haven, Conn., on Oct. 11, 2014 and a graveside service in Tyler on Nov. 8, 2014, for Frances Grimes Duff Maley, who died Sept. 27, 2014, two days shy of her 90th birthday. Mrs. Maley died under Hospice care in New Haven, Conn., where she lived at The Mary Wade Home, after residing several years with her daughter, Patricia, also of New Haven.

Frances was born Sept. 29, 1924, in Jacksonville to William McKinley and Mary Alice Grimes and grew up on a farm just outside Jacksonville in the New Hope community. She attended school there through the ninth grade and helped raise her two brothers while her parents ran the family farm. Frances graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1942, and then exceptionally for the time moved to Houston to attend Jefferson Davis Hospital School of Nursing, from which she graduated as a registered nurse. While attending Jeff Davis, Frances met and later married Dr. Robert L. Duff, with whom she had their three children.

Frances worked as an R.N. for Dr. William "Bill" Read for many years at his pediatric office in Tyler where she was loved by his patients for her caring nature and loving spirit. After being divorced for several years Frances had the great fortune of meeting Daniel Patrick Maley Jr., and they began a long and happy marriage together on Dec. 11, 1971, that ended at his death on June 8, 1998. Dan and Frances traveled across the country in their motor home with a group of close friends over a period of many years, and they were well-known for their famous St. Patrick's Day parties that began when they lived at Hideaway Lake and continued after they built a beautiful home on Lake Jacksonville, the site of several weddings, wedding receptions, baby showers and holiday celebrations over the years.

Frances was a consummate hostess and was a very talented decorator and artist, particularly loving to make ceramic Santa Clauses of all kinds for friends and family. She was a loving, devoted wife, the best mother anyone could ask for and the sweetest mother-in-law who ever lived. She adored her children and their spouses, loved her step-children and was a wonderful "Honey" for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, James Grimes and Billy Wayne Grimes of Jacksonville; the father of her children, Robert L. Duff, M.D. of Tyler; her beloved husband, Daniel P. Maley Jr.; Dan's grandson, Matthew Phelps; and her sister-in-law, Merdee Grimes.

She is survived by her children, Patricia S. Duff of New Haven, Conn., R. Lewis "Lew" Duff and wife Kathleen, of Tyler, and Nancy J. Duff and husband David C. Mertz, of Princeton, N.J ,; her stepchildren, D. Patrick Maley III and wife Nancy Turck, of London, England, and Melinda Maley, of Garland. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Christopher S. Rogers and wife Stephanie, of Tampa, Fla., Austin L. Duff of Midland, Lezley Duff Bergfeld and husband Chris, of Tyler, McKinley Mertz and Adam Mertz, both of Princeton, N.J., Charla Phelps Lanier of Dike; and her great-grandchildren, Sophia Rogers and Lane Rogers, of Tampa, Fla., and Maley Elizabeth Bergfeld, of Tyler. Frances is also survived by her much loved sisters-in-law, Shelby Grimes, of Tyler and Fort Worth, and Glenda Grimes Blackshear of Jacksonville; along with numerous nieces and nephews and cherished friends.

Frances Maley was a delightful person to whom people were immediately drawn upon meeting her.
She had a terrific sense of humor, was an awesome, creative cook and loved to make other people happy. She loved people unconditionally, was never judgmental and was simply the example of how you want people to be. Even as she dealt with the advance of Alzheimer's disease, she kept her sense of humor and loving good nature. She will be greatly missed.

The family would like to recognize and thank the staff at The Mary Wade Home for their care and attention during these past three years, and the loving care of Seasons Hospice. At Frances' request, donations may be made to the MS Society at www.nationalmssociety.org.
