Mrs. Gertrude Kidman, a pioneer resident of Sioux Rapids, Buena Vista County, passed away at Mercy Hospital, Fort Dodge, on Monday morning, Dec. 14th, at age 94 years and 27 days. In failing health, she entered the hospital on October 6th and from then on slowly weakened until death relieved her of her earthly sufferings.

On Wednesday afternoon the remains were brought to the Henry Funeral Home from where the body was taken to St. Joseph Catholic Church for requiem high mass at 10:00 Thursday with Father O. W. Koester, the pastor, as celebrant. Rev. C. E. Farrelly of Emmetsburg preached the funeral sermon. Rev. A. Ahlers of Laurens was also present. Both are former pastors.

The remains were laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery at Storm Lake beside her husband who preceded her in death 20 years ago.

Six grandsons served as pallbearers. They were Robert Johnson, Geo. And Leo Diederich, Richard Kidman, Arlo Powell and Clifford King.

Mrs. Kathleen Jenk and Welch Laufersweiler sang the mass, at the close of which Mr. Lauferweiler sang “Ave Maria”.

Mrs. Kidman was born in Reimlingen, Bavaria, Germany, on Nov. 17, 1859, the daughter of Ulrich and Johanna Wengert. She came to the United States with her parents when six years old. The family settled in Independence, Ia., where she received her schooling. On Sept. 7, 1885, she was married to George Kidman. The couple resided at Independence until 1887, when they moved to their farm near Sioux Rapids where she has made her home since.

Mrs. Kidman lead a quiet life and was devoted to her family, her home, her neighbors, and her church. During her lengthy illness she was appreciative of the many kindnesses shown her by relatives and friends.

Surviving Mrs. Kidman are two sons, George C. Kidman who lives at home and Carl U. Kidman of Gardnerville, Nev.; two daughters, Mrs. Henry Diederich, who resides on a farm near Rolfe, and Mrs. C. Reuben Johnson of Le Center, Minn.; one brother, Geo. Wengert of Independence, Ia., a sister, Mrs. Rose Clough of Sioux Rapids; and 17 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Her husband, George Kidman, passed away in 1933. Her parents, two grandsons, three great-grandsons, three brothers and one sister also preceded her in death.

Attending the funeral from a distance were Carl Kidman and Capt. Richard Kidman from Nevada; Mr. and Mrs. Rueben Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford King, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Creighton James, and Mrs. Juanita Strett from Minn.; besides Mrs. Rose Clough and many neighbors and friends.

Being one of the early pioneers of the Sioux Rapids community, she saw the country progress from homestead stage to the present days, and her labors were hard and many. During that time she was always ready to lend a helping hand to her neighbors and friends.
