Jody Mackenzie of Carlsbad, New Mexico, died May 2. She was 72.

Mackenzie was born October 20, 1941, in Piedmont, California, to William A. Mackenzie and Elizabeth (Jordan) Shaffer. She worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California, for 20 years and Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California, for 18 years. Mackenzie moved to Carlsbad in 2005. She enjoyed traveling, shopping and dining out at restaurants.

Mackenzie is survived by her lifelong friend and partner of 47 years, Carol Modrall of Carlsbad, New Mexico; mother, Elizabeth Shaffer of Coronada, California; brother, Owen Shaffer of California; sons, Bod Modrall of Carlsbad, New Mexico, Sam Modrall of California, Steve Modrall of Roswell, New Mexico; three grandchildren, Shanda Modrall, Scott Modrall, Samantha Modrall; one great-grandson, Jakub Anthony Hernandez; three little Chihuahuas, Lola, Muffin, Austin and her cat, Peanut.

There will be no visitation; cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 24 at the Loving Baptist Church in Loving, New Mexico, with Pastor Zack Palen officiating. Denton-Wood Funeral Home in Carlsbad, New Mexico, is in charge of the arrangements.
