Antonietta Iacocca, 90, of Allentown, mother of former Chrysler Corp. chairman and CEO Lee A. Iacocca, died yesterday in her home. She was the wife of the late Nicola Iacocca, a prominent Allentown restaurateur and real estate broker.
Throughout her life, as her son rose to prominence in the American auto industry, she was often involved in civic affairs.
In 1986, she was a guest at the rededication of the Statue of Liberty on the eve of Independence Day, sitting with her son and his family in a separate booth between President Ronald and Nancy Reagan and President Francois and Madame Mitterand of France.
That same year, Lee Iacocca dedicated Iacocca Plaza at Lehigh University in her honor and in memory of his father.
She was the first woman named Mother of the Year by the Allentown Center City Association, in 1985.
In 1992, she was honorary chairwoman of the Allentown Columbus Quincentenary Committee. She became chairwoman after Lee Iacocca could not take the position and recommended her to take his place.
Born in San Marco, Italy, she was a daughter of the late Giuseppe and Assunta Perrotto.
Wed in a small church in San Marco, northeast of Naples, she was married 52 years when her husband died in 1973. On their Golden Anniversary in 1971, they were presented with a medallion sculpted by Michael Iacocca, a cousin and sculptor-medalist at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia.
She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Allentown.
Survivors include her son Lee A. Iacocca of Palm Springs, Calif.; daughter, Mrs. Delma M. Kelechava of Bethlehem; sister, Linda Sacco in Italy; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
