Ira and Emma farmed for many years in South Dakota before coming to Agnew, Clallam County, Washington about 1940.

They had one son Wayne and raised another son, Ivyl Chapman, who was actually the biological son of Ira's brother Lee and wife Edna. Edna died when Ivyl was just under two months old.

Ira and Emma enjoyed 75 years of happy marriage. The secret they said was togetherness, they did everything together. They were both 17 when they got married on Feb 7, 1900 and their travels took them to several states. They always worked hard but kept returning to farming.

They tempered hard work with fun; they enjoyed picnics and loved to dance.
