OROVILLE >> Authorities have arrested an Oroville resident in connection to the death of a 19-year-old who was among four people allegedly shot at while driving on Highway 70.
On Wednesday, the Butte County Sheriff's Office arrested Ker Vang, 22, on suspicion of homicide in the killing of Jar Pao Lee, of Oroville, according to the Sheriff's Office. Vang is being held in Butte County Jail without bail.
A surviving shooting victim who was reported to have been shot in the face is recovering, according to a press release from the Sheriff's Office, but authorities are not releasing his name, citing safety concerns.
Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jason Hail said Thursday that he could not comment further on the victim's condition.
At about 1:50 a.m. Monday, Sheriff's Office deputies received a report of gunshots being fired into vehicles on the highway.
Four people in two separate vehicles had left an area near a grocery store on Oro Dam Boulevard, Hail told this newspaper. Vang reportedly followed the victims on northbound Highway 70 and allegedly shot up the two vehicles while they were on the off ramp south of the Nelson Road and Grand Avenue.
Two people inside a truck were uninjured and remained in Oroville, but two people inside the second car targeted showed up at Enloe Medical Center with gunshot wounds, Hail said.
About 20 minutes after Butte County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the highway shooting, the Chico Police Department notified deputies of the two gunshot victims.
Investigators at the time were trying to determine whether the incidents were related and who were victims and who were suspects, Hail said. Since, detectives have learned the four people were victims and Vang is allegedly the only person responsible for the shooting.
Hail said he could not comment on what type of weapon Vang allegedly used or whether any of the four other people fired back.
The four people were allegedly friends who were traveling to the same location when the shooting happened, he said. Hail would not comment on whether Vang knew the four victims, he added.
Vang is allegedly a documented gang member, however investigators have found anything that links the victims to any street gang, Hail said.
There's also nothing to suggests that Monday's shooting is connected to a rolling gunbattle in Chico on Saturday afternoon, Hail said.
On Saturday, alleged rival gangs exchanged gunfire at about 1:15 p.m. near Manzanita and Marjorie avenues and continued in the Bank of America parking lot at North Valley Plaza. Four people, including three Oroville residents and a 17-year-old from Sacramento, were charged in Butte County Superior Court on Wednesday. Boy Bird Yang, 22, Paul Hue Thao, 20, Nelson Thao, 18, and Zeng Her remain in custody in connection to the Chico shooting.
Hail said a motive for Monday's shooting has not yet been determined.
