The highlight of the right-hander's career came in his first big-league season with the St. Louis Cardinals when he entered Game 2 of the 1944 World Series in the eighth inning. He pitched four scoreless innings against the St. Louis Browns, struck out seven and picked up the win when the Redbirds scored in the 11th inning for a 3-2 victory. He already was 30 years when he broke in with the Cardinals, going 2-1 with a 2.12 earned run average in 27 games. In 1945, he was 8-10 with a 3.52 ERA in 166 innings pitched. He was sold to the Philadelphia Phillies on July 6, 1946. He pitched for them through the 1950 season before being sold to Boston on April 16, 1951. He saw action in only six games for the Braves. His eight-year totals were 27-36 with a 3.49 ERA.
