Jos. Berning Sr. aged 79, a pioneer of Kniest township died at his home two miles west and one mile north of Mt. Carmel Tuesday at 10 o'clock in the forenoon. The funeral occurs there today.

Johannes Bernard Heinrich Berning, known as Bernard, was born in Coesfeld, Germany. He married Elizabeth Bruggenbrock in 1863. They had at least 5 children: Bernard, Anna (John) Lammers, Katherine (Henry) Lampe, Joseph, and Elizabeth (Frank) Haverkamp. The family immigrated to the US in 1868 (when Anna was a baby) and settled in Kniest Township, near Mount Carmel, Carroll, Iowa.
