ROENE (GILLILAND) VORCE

Roene Vorce, 89 of Yuma, passed away on October 4, 2014 at the Yuma Life Care Center. Roene was born January 14, 1925 in McCook, Nebraska. She was the youngest of eight children born to William Robert Gilliland and Bertha Alice (Patterson) Gilliland. Her seven older siblings were Esther, Ray, Erma, Dorothy, Delbert, Bruce, and Wayne. The Gilliland family farmed north of McCook, and was known for being a quilting team, sewing up numerous quilts. The Gilliland's moved to Yuma County in 1929 and lived south of Eckley where they farmed. They also lived in Yuma for a time. Roene attended grade school at Eckley. She developed lifelong friendships in the small school. She loved music and played banjo and guitar and sang. Roene married Gerald Elvin Vorce on January 4, 1943 in St. Francis, KS. Gerald served in the US Army from 1944 to 1946. Roene remained with her parents in Denver during WWII. Upon his return, three children were born to this union: Gary, Donna, and Rick. They attended schools in High Prairie, Cope and Arickaree. They attended the Peniel Church of the Nazarene in their area. Together Roene and Gerald farmed and ranched south of Otis. He raised wheat, corn, milo, and millet. His livestock included cattle and swine. They raised chickens, milked cows, and fed many kittens. This property is still farmed by the family today. They moved into Otis in 1999, turning the farming over to their son, Rick. Roene's mother taught her to practice the Golden Rule. Her husband led her to a closer walk with the Lord. They loved attending church and revivals, both at Peniel, Akron Baptist, and at the Yuma Church of the Nazarene. In their later years, they attended the Otis Baptist Church. The couple faithfully watched Billy Graham revivals on the neighbor's television, with permission, even if the hosts were gone. The family attended one night service of Billy Graham and several concerts of Singing Lundstroms and Singing Shook Family whenever they were near. Roene sang along with them and with their recordings. In the early years, Roene was Gerald's "farmhand." She helped do many farm chores. She also belonged to three ladies' clubs, including the quilting club and others. She enjoyed her crafting more than the kitchen work, which was required. She made lovely Christmas tree Skirts, as well as numerous quilts as gifts for family members. She enjoyed many crafts like pouring resin and candle wax into molds. She sewed doll dresses; she crocheted tablecloths, doilies, and granddaughter's dress. Besides her sewing and crafting, Roene gardened and canned pickles. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, and she was always there to support them. They enjoyed singing Christmas carols together. She enjoyed hearing her brother Wayne play guitar and sing. "Red River Valley" was one of their favorites. Roene and Gerald owned a single engine Cessna and they traveled to airshows and fly-ins. They enjoyed a long marriage of over 63 years, and he passed away January 11, 2006 at their Otis home. Roene was proud and thankful for her faith, marriage, and family. Roene is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gerald, and grandchildren Natalie Jean Juhl and Darin Lynn Vorce. Also preceding her in death are her seven older siblings: Esther Harr, Erma Gumm, Dorothy Harr, Ray Gilliland, Delbert Gilliland, Bruce Gilliland (Died in Africa in WWII), and Wayne Gilliland. Surviving Roene are her son Gary Vorce and wife Nancy of Akron, and their children David (Sharon) , JoAnn (Dan), Dwight (Diane), and JulieAnn (Jason); daughter Donna Dressel and husband Phil of Yuma, and their children Nathan, Andrea, Michael (Tresa), and Krista; son Rick Vorce and girlfriend Pam Chipps of Akron. Roene is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at the Otis Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the Otis Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of the Plains.
