Herman Abney was born Sunday, November 3, 1918, at Good Water, Mo., a son of the late Leslie Porter Abney and Letha Mae Abney (nee Parks).
He entered eternal rest Tuesday, July 2, 2003 at the Delmar Gardens South, St. Louis, Mo., at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 29 days.
On March 19, 1941, Herman was united in marriage to Hilda Mae Crocker. One daughter, Wanda, and two sons, Charles and Gary, were born to this union. They have enjoyed over 62 years together.
On April 29, 1944 Herman was inducted into the U.S. Army, serving with the 110th Infantry. He saw combat duty in the Ardennes, Central Europe and Rhineland battle and campaigns. He was awarded three Bronze Stars and a Good Conduct Medal for these campaigns. He was wounded in France February 1, 1945 and was awarded a Purple Heart for these injuries. He was honorably discharged December 28, 1945.
After his military service Herman was employed by Prairie Farm Dairies, where he worked for 37 years.
In addition to his parents Herman was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Wayne Ballance; six sisters, Norma Jean Skaggs, Verda and husband Thurman Hawthorne, Lemon Abney, Bertha and husband Leonard Thornton, Shirley and husband Robert Herr, Velma and husband Paul Byrd; first brother expired as an infant; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Junies Engelhardt, Roy Frasier, George Fisher, Alpha and Oren Henderson, Lola and Al Upton, Goldie Marie Crocker, Harold and Eleanor Crocker, Eugene Crocker, Sam Crocker, Jerry and Daphine Crocker and Robert Crocker.
Among those who remain to mourn his passing are his devoted wife Hilda Mae Abney of St. Louis, Mo.; one daughter Wanda Ballance of St. Louis, Mo.; two sons, Charles Abney and wife Judith of Festus, Mo. and Gary Abney of Jacksonville, Florida; two brothers, Arnold Abney and wife Betty of Steelville, Mo., Arthur Abney and wife Shirley of St. Charles, Mo.; two sisters, Martha Abney of Salem, Mo. and Verniece Engelhardt of Steelville, Mo.
Eight grandchildren, three step grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, six step great grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Radis Skaggs of Viburnum, Mo., Inis Frasier of Belleview, Mo., Dolcie Fisher of Jacksonville, Florida, Jeannie Crocker of Festus, Mo., and Jessie Crocker of Potosi, Mo.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Herman Abney lay in state 5-8:30 p.m. Friday, July 4, 2003, at the Britton Brothers Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 5, 2003, in the Britton Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Chandler officiating. Terry Hogan provided musical selections.
Committal prayers and interment were in Sam Crocker Cemetery, Goodland, Mo. Serving as pallbearers were Charles Abney, Mark Barton, David Crocker, Kraig Langeneckert, Donald Thornton, and Kenneth Thornton.
Full military honors were provided for graveside services. Arrangements were under the direction of the Britton Funeral Home, Steelville, Mo.
