Catherine was born in Ouderkerk, the Netherlands on Jan. 26, 1914. She was the youngest of nine children born to Jacob and Neeltje (de Bruijn) Verkerk. She received her grade school education and three years following that in Ouderkerk. As a young girl she worked in a bakery.
She married Maurits de Haan on June 26, 1940 and to this union six children were born. The couple operated a dairy products store in Amsterdam where she worked behind the counter selling their products.
In June 1957 they immigrated to the United States and settled in Pella. During this time, Catherine cleaned houses for various families. In 1969 Catherine and Morris ventured to Artesia, Calif., where they worked as custodians at the Trinity Christian Reformed Church. In 1978 they returned to Pella where their last employment was in custodial work at Vermeer Manufacturing Company. Following their retirement, they continued to enjoy traveling.
Following Morris's death in 1993, Catherine became a resident at Hilltop Manor South and since February 1998 had been cared for in the Long Term Care Unit at the Pella Regional Health Center.
She was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading. She loved her family, her Dutch Christian books, and her Lord.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris; her parents, Jacob and Neeltje de Bruijn Verkerk; and siblings, Dirkje De Haan, Cornelia Verburg, Marretje De Neef, Marijtje Verkerk, Huibert Verkerk, Aagje Rijskamp, Anne De Vries and Neeltje Rigter.
She is survived by five sons and four daughters-in-law, Sam and Nancine De Haan of Scottsboro, Ala., Jake and Thereasa De Haan of Byron Center, Mich., John M. and Karen De Haan of Pella, Hubert De Haan of Louisville, Ky., and Maurice and Linda De Haan of Pella; a daughter and her husband, Tena and Ken Eekhoff of Otley; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
