Son of Daniel Ashby and Henrietta Bull. Husband of Mary Tisdale (the couple were divorced) and Laura Andrews.

Children with Mary were Roberta (who married George Eckles), Raymond Temple and Margaret.

Death certificate lists place of burial as Asbury; however, cemetery book included Samuel at Keytesville City Cemetery.

His second wife, Laura P. was born in MO on August 20, 1864. She was the daughter of E.J. Andrews. Her first husband was Lee Eddens/Eddins. The couple married in Chariton County on November 22, 1885. One known child: William G. She died in Salisbury, Chariton County, MO on November 16, 1931. Death certificate indicates Laura is buried at Asbury Cemetery.

The Moberly Monitor-Index and Moberly Evening Democrat, 21 Apr 1942, reported the funeral of Ashby:
CLIFTON HILL, April 21 -- Funeral services for Samuel Woodson Ashby, who died Sunday morning, were held Monday afternoon at the Keytesville Methodist church by the Rev. M. L. Shemwell. Burial was in the Keytesville cemetery. Mr. Ashby was born May 26, 1866, in Chariton County and was married December 21, 1892, to Miss Mary Tisdale. He is survived by two children, Mrs. George Eckles and Raymond Ashby of St. Louis; and two grandchildren, Mrs. Russell Swanson and Raymond Ashby, Jr., of St. Louis. Mr. Ashby has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Thurston of Clifton Hill for the past two weeks. His death followed a week's illness.
