Francis was the son of Francis M. and Nancy Higginbotham. He originally enlisted in the Union Army in 1861 for a 3-year term and then re-enlisted at Martinsburg, WV on Feb 1, 1864, for another 3-year term. He served as a Private in the 7th W.Va. Cavalry, Company F.


He married Jemina Pierce Tucker in May of 1856 in Putnam County, WV. Jemina was the daughter of William and Lucinda Pierce. She was born May 1832, in Putnam Co., WV. They had a son, John B. Higginbotham b. 13 Nov 1856.


Details of Francis's death are unknown, but multiple sicknesses and hospitalizations are noted in his military service records. He may not have been in good health.
