The death of Mr. James Connolly, which occurred at the family residence in Table Mound township on Saturday evening, July 8th, will be sincerely regretted by his many friends in Dubuque and the southern part of the county where he resided for over sixty years.
In his death an upright and model citizen in every sense has passed away and one who will long be remembered as a man of sterling and unblemished character. His generosity, kindness and happy disposition naturally secured to him a large circle of acquaintances, all of whom were his friends, whose sympathy will go out to his bereaved widow, the companion of his life for over fifty years, and his family. While 74 years of age he enjoyed good health until stricken with apoplexy one week before his death, which came peacefully as he had lived and fortified by the last rites of the church of which he had always been a faithful member.
Mr. Connolly was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, in 1831, and with his younger brothers was brought to Iowa in 1842, the family settling in Jackson county.
In 1855 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Hanifin [sic s/b Hannifan], who survives him with seven sons and three daughters. These are Mrs. Wm. J. Clark, Mrs. Thomas Powers, Mrs. Frank Smythe, and Michael, Thomas, Wm. J., Joseph, James, Cornelius and Ambrose Connolly. The late Thomas Connolly of Dubuque and P. R. Connolly, still residing at Melleray, and the deceased were brothers.
