Barbara Fox Appell died of natural causes at her home on Thursday, October 2, 2014. She was born in York, the daughter of the late Helen (Sprenkle) Fox Appell, and Louis J. Appell, Jr. She is survived by her father, her step mother Josephine (Schmidt), her sister Helen and her brother Louis, III. Also surviving is her Aunt Helen A. Norton, her Uncle George N. Appell, several nieces and nephews, two step brothers David and James Davidson and a step sister Susan Davidson Linton. She attended schools in York Suburban and Dallastown and graduated from Miss Hall's School in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. She attended Claremont Colleges (California) and received a Masters degree in social work from the University of Baltimore. In her youth, she was an enthusiastic horse-woman, participating in fox hunting and horse shows. Her love of animals was life-long. She appreciated the beauty in life: a music lover, and admirer of the visual and performing arts, an enthusiastic gardener and an avid, discerning reader. Talented musically, she was an accomplished pianist and for a time sang in the choir of Saint John's Episcopal Church where she had been baptized. She possessed a spontaneous, joyous sense of humor. A caring person, she was quick to offer assistance to persons of all kinds. Understanding that our society is sustained by the support of individuals, she was a willing and generous donor to a wide variety of charitable causes. She will be greatly missed by her family to whom she was deeply devoted. At the time of her death, she was much involved with the restoration of her grandparents' home of which she had many fond memories. Funeral services will be private. Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 S. George St., York, is in charge of arrangements. Persons wishing to memorialize her may consider a gift to the Fund for York County at the York County Community Foundation, 14 W.
