Henry was son of Hans Michael Gutknecht .

On 28 Nov 1779 Henry was appointed constable of Mercer Co. KY and on 4 Feb 1800, he was appointed constable in Washington Co. KY.

Henry was in Pfeifer's Light Horse Brigade during the Revolution and obtained a pension. He was listed living with son David in the 1840 census of veterans. Henry's pension payments were made up to March 1845 so he died around that time. Payments were made in March and September each year, so the best we can say is he died between March and September.

His pension application names his wife as Elizabeth. Her surname is given as Chisholm in the DAR Patriot Index. A Mrs. Adelia Salee of Norman, Oklahoma, (the area where Jesse Chisholm lived) wrote to Elsie Spry Davis in 1971 that Henry Goodnight, born Aug 1758 married Elizabeth Chisholm the daughter of a 1/2 Cherokee John Chisholm. We tried to locate Mrs. Salee by phone in 1982 but couldn't find her. Mrs Davis thought she was old at the time of writing and may have passed away.

Known children are John H. Goodnight who died in Barry Co., MO in 1859, Henry Goodnight, Jr. who died in Van Buren Co., AR in 1860 or 1861, Christina Mercer/Messer, Elizabeth Ruff, and David who was in Greene Co., MO in 1853.

For some reason some people think Henry is buried at the Goodnight Cemetery in Barry Co., MO but the family was not in that county until several year after Henry died and John H. Goodnight was the first to be buried there in 1859. They also think Henry's first name is John but there is no reason to think that because he had a brother John S. Goodnight. Also, his son Henry Goodnight, Jr. was called Jr. and his first name was not John. I can't explain all the mixed up Goodnight genealogies unless people are believing every hint put up by Ancestry applies to the person they are looking at.
