They took a homestead near Almena, Norton Co., Kansas, between 1889 and 1899, they had six children. Family stories were that Sarah did not like the "pioneer" lifestyle of being on the farm and missing her Indiana family she left her husband and children and returned to Indiana. The children were placed with local families to care for. The Census of 1900 she is in Almena, however the Census of 1910 Eli had remarried and took some of the smaller children back to his home. Later it was shared that she was blind and living in a convalescent home in South Bend, St. Joseph Co., In. and had lived a full and long life. Actual date of death nor her grave have been found.
