H.R. (Shorty) Clark Services Held December 26
Services were December 26 for Howard Reed Clark, 57, at First Baptist Church in Bedford, officiated by Rev. Ted DeHass and Rev. Ollie Odle. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery, Bedford. Mr. Clark died in Bedford December 22, 1983.
Howard Reed Clark, son of Hobart McKinley Clark and Elnora Marie Flynn, was born at Anita, Adair [Cass] County, Iowa on April 19, 1926.
On March 6, 1945, he was united in marriage to Ruth Hanshaw in Wathena, Kansas. They lived all their married life in Bedford, Iowa, except for two years when they lived in Grant City, Missouri.
Three children were born to bless this union: Cathy Lou, Brent D., and Patricia Lynn.
Howard served two years in the U.S. Navy Air Force. He was engaged in several businesses. After a short time of owning and operating the Conoco Station, Howard, or Shorty, as he was known by many, worked for thirteen years for Emmert Chevrolet as salesman and bookkeeper. He worked as secretary for Farmers Mutual Insurance Company for thirteen years, also owning his own agency. Leaving the insurance business in 1973, Shorty and Ruth moved to Grant City, Missouri where they were in partnership with Country Boys Lumber Company. While living there, he was elected to serve as Mayor. After two years they returned to Bedford, owning and operating Clark Lumber Company where he was working when His Lord called him Home.
Shorty had many interests, which included his church, Bedford First Baptist, where he was a member and served in many capacities over the years, his hobby as a ham operator for many years and being a member of the Bedford Flying Club, flying his own plane. He was Past Noble Grand and Past District Deputy Grand Master of Bedford Lodge #91. He also enjoyed serving his community. He was Boy Scout Master for several years, helped organize Bedford's Purple Palace Teen Center and was a reserve officer for Taylor County.
At the time of his death, Shorty was serving on the board of directors for the Lumberman's Independent Association and was secretary of the Fairview Cemetery Association.
He was preceded in death by his father, brother-in-law Kenny Wallace, nephew Allan Wallace, mother-in-law Catherine Hanshaw, and father-in-law Carr Hanshaw.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Ruth, his mother Elnora Clark of Bedford, one son Brent, and his wife Debbie of Glenwood, two daughters, Cathy and her husband Terry Odle of Gardner, Kansas, and Patricia and her husband David Dukes of Bedford; the grandchildren: Alison Clark, Brandi and Tera Odle, Elaina, Troy and Kathryn (Katy) Dukes; two sisters, Maxine Wallace of Stuart, Phyllis Clark of Des Moines, and one brother Dean Clark of Bedford. Also two brothers-in-law, Clif[f] Hanshaw and wife Ethel, Forrest Hanshaw and wife Kay; nieces and nephews. Shorty will be fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
Shorty was a kind and considerate husband and dad. He loved his family and was deeply loved and respected by each of them. He taught them to love the Lord and to love one another. He enjoyed his grandchildren who lovingly called him "Papa"; they were his pride and joy.
