June 19, 1934 - October 2, 2014
Wanda McNeil Prillaman, 80, of 495 Hickory Ridge Road, Martinsville, VA passed away on Thursday, October 2, 2014 at Carilion Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, VA. She was born on June 19, 1934 in Nebo, VA to the late Alda “Big Mac” McNeil and Ocea Ann McNeil.
Mrs. Prillaman will always be remembered as one of the area’s most celebrated artists. She was a graduate of Radford College where she majored in Art. Wanda enriched our community by teaching art at Martinsville High School, Bassett High School, Drewry Mason High School, Patrick Henry Community College and in her home. Mrs. Prillaman was a Virginia water-colorist who showed her work in many regional and state shows and received countless awards. Her painting can be found in numerous private collections in the United States, France and England, and in collections owned by libraries and colleges.
Wanda enjoyed being an active member of the community where she was involved in many different clubs and organizations. She co-organized the Lynwood Artists - a group of regional painters and artists, was a past president and sustaining member of the Martinsville Charity League, helped found the Piedmont Arts Association where she later became President, and was a past President of the Virginia Watercolor Society for the year 2000. She was also a member of the Garden Study Club, the El Libro Book Club, did artwork for the Baptist Cookbook and was a Master Gardner.
Even with all her teaching, art-work and busy schedule she never lost sight of being a great wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all that knew and loved her.
She is survived by her husband, Hal Prillaman of the residence; daughter, Ann Hamre and significant other Dewayne Cox of Fort Worth, TX; grandchildren, Ian Hamre and wife Cass and their son Emmet of Hardy, VA, Max Hamre who is serving in Navy in Newport, RI, Jules Hamre of Fort Worth, TX, Violet Hamre a junior at Oklahoma University, Chloe Cox and Duke Cox of Fort Worth Texas; sisters, Billie Ann Muncy of Bland, VA and Eleanor Kemper of Huntersville, NC.
The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday October 7, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Martinsville with Pastor John Fulcher officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Martinsville. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, October 6, 2014 at the church.
