La Prairie, Nov. 3.—The funeral services of Samuel Hyndman Pierce were conducted at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Methodist church of La Prairie, by the Rev. W. D. Mcintosh of Bowen, and the Rev. Nash of La Prairie. Interment was in Bowen cemetery. Mr. Pierce died at La Prairie Friday, at the home of his nephew, E. P. Carlin, with whom he had lived for several years. His age was 71 years, 10 months and 27 days. Mr. Pierce was born in Middletown, Butler county, Ohio, December 3, 1842, When four years of age he was brought by his parents, John and Mary Ann Pierce, from Ohio to Illinois, the journey being made by wagon. They settled in Kinderhook, Pike county, and in 1847 moved to Gilmer township, Adam county. When Samuel was eleven years old, his father died, leaving his mother with six children. He remained with his mother until he had reached his majority and later, with his brother Polk, bought a farm near La Prairie, where they lived until fifteen years ago, when his brother moved to Colorado, and the deceased to La Prairie, where he lived until his death. He was especially fond of children, and many of the little ones will miss the annual Christmas gift that always came from him. He leaves to mourn his loss two sisters, Mrs. Lucy A. Carlin and Miss Annie E. Pierce of Bowen, and two brothers, I. L. Pierce of Bowen, and Thomas K. Polk Pierce of Colorado. The Quincy Daily Herald, Tuesday, November 03, 1914; Page: 12. Mr. Pierce was born in Middletown, Butler county, Ohio, December 3, 1842, When four years of age he was brought by his parents, John and Mary Ann Pierce, from Ohio to Illinois, the journey being made by wagon. They settled in Kinderhook, Pike county, and in 1847 moved to Gilmer township, Adam county. When Samuel was eleven years old, his father died, leaving his mother with six children. He remained with his mother until he had reached his majority and later, with his brother Polk, bought a farm near La Prairie, where they lived until fifteen years ago, when his brother moved to Colorado, and the deceased to La Prairie, where he lived until his death.
He was especially fond of children, and many of the little ones will miss the annual Christmas gift that always came from him. He leaves to mourn his loss two sisters, Mrs. Lucy A. Carlin and Miss Annie E. Pierce of Bowen, and two brothers, I. L. Pierce of Bowen, and Thomas K. Polk Pierce of Colorado.
