Carol Staib Bates, 96, of Mesopotamia, passed away Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, at Briar Hill Health Care in Middlefield.
Carol was born Dec. 12, 1920, in Huntsburg, the daughter of Carl John and Dorothea Ann Grace Staib.
She resided in Akron until June 1936, and graduated from Akron Glover Grade School. She graduated from Mesopotamia High School in 1939. Carol worked for Geauga Industries 27 years and retired in 1983.
Carol married Harry E. Bates on Nov. 9, 1940, and together they had two sons, Maynard (Patty) Bates of South Carolina and Harold (Jodi) Bates of Mesopotamia; six grandchildren, Daniel Bates, Aaron Bates, Allyson Yoder, Cindy Rolf, Jeffrey Bates and Kelly Meyer; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, David Staib of Parkman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, in 1986; her parents; two sisters, Virginia Allen and Margaret Shaw; and daughter-in-law, Martha Barbe Bates.
She was a member of Mesopotamia United Methodist Church and the Historical Society, the Ladies Golf League at Grandview Golf Club, the Mayfield Methodist Hilltoppers and was a past member of Enterprise Grange and Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed golfing, bowling, outdoor work and needlework. She especially loved making teddy bears for her grandchildren.
Per her wishes, a private burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Mesopotamia.
