Flora - Joseph E. Childress, 93, passed away on December 21, 2020 in Hattiesburg, MS. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at the Flora city cemetery at 1:00pm.

Joe was born on January 3, 1927 to Katherine Hawkins and John Childress and was a lifelong resident of Flora. As a young man his wish was to join the Navy during World War II but at only 17 his mother would not sign for him, so he joined the Merchant Marines instead. He worked many years for the MS State Tax Commission. Joe always had a funny story from his growing up with all his brothers. He was very caring, overly generous, faithful and always willing to listen and encourage but most of all he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and son, and will be greatly missed.

Joe was preceded in death by his infant son Jeffrey Childress, daughter Rosa Childress Vance, son John Edward Childress, brothers Jack Childress, Lee Childress, Ben Childress and Don Lane.

He is survived by his wife of 74 years Mary Ann Lilley Childress, daughter Jo Ann Childress, Sisters Kay Hunt (Bill) and Nancy Yorkers, daughter-in-law Pat Childress, seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
