Our dad was born at home, in rural Fremont County, in 1939. His birth wasn't properly recorded so, to his great dismay, he was never able to secure a passport and visit Ireland.Dad graduated from North Fremont High School in 1957. "The Musher" reveals he was President of Associated Male Students, starred in plays, photographed and wrote for the paper, played football and basketball and was a photogenic ham. Dad served in the National Guard. He was also a well-regarded police officer in Pocatello. After finishing his history degree at Idaho State, he worked the rest of his professional career for the State of Idaho, as regional economist in Pocatello. A search of local newspaper archives shows just how successful dad was as a policeman and as a trusted advisor to regional businesses. Dad was an accomplished outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, skiing, camping and touring. He and his late second wife, Helen, were competitive golfers. His children readily attest to his generosity. Dad enjoyed cooking and reading. He knew all the varieties of hummingbirds and song birds which he fed for decades. He attracted the occasional stray cat, which he had a knack for domesticating. He loved fast cars and pretty girls. In the end, he insisted on leaving the ICU and going home. Ninety minutes after four big firemen carried him up to his favorite recliner, he quietly waved goodbye and bid us adieu. We are so proud of how he stayed in control of his life. He lived how he wanted and then died where and when he wanted. Jerry's only sibling, Joyce Hancock, passed away earlier this year. Jerry is survived by his first wife, Margie Maxine Giles McGinnis, his children Kathleen Marie, Michael Dean, Kevin Lance and Patrick James and his best friend Jenny. Jerry has 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.A graveside memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 8th, at Mountain View Cemetery, section 52E. row 23. Services will be directed by Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel.
