Migrated from Cornwall around 1880 and married Margaret Rose Talbot (1864 – 1929) in Milparinka, New South Wales on 17 May 1883
They lived in Broken Hill before moving to Coolgardie. In the 1890s he was in a builder partnership - Philp & Royle, Builders & contractors - building the Presbyterian Church in 1895
