ADELBERT ‘DEL’ SMITH, 88, of Box 93, Milan is resting peacefully after a long and courageous battle after a stroke in 1995. He passed away Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000 at the Robert Packer Hospital. He was born March 15, 1912 in Sheshequin Township the son of the late Allen and Mary Sidney Smith. He graduated from Ulster High School in 1930 where he played many sports including basketball and baseball. He appeared in many musicals and minstrel plays and operas and was known to many because of his singing and yodeling. He loved to hunt with his boys and many, many friends. He farmed for many years with his family and worked at the Ingersoll Rand in Athens and Sylvania in Towanda. He drove school bus for 43 years for the Athens Area School District. His greatest love was for his family and the school bus children. He was a member of the Ulster United Methodist Church for 39 years and transferred to the Milan United Methodist Church, where he was a member for 38 years. He was a member of the IOOF Lodge, Sheshequin, the Laurel Hill Grange, where he held all offices, the A&FM of Athens, the Beagle Club and Coon Hunters. He was also a treasurer for Sheffield Farms. He was a member of the Town Team Ball –both in Ulster and Milan- and the Little League for Ulster. He married his wife, Mary Etta Hicks Smith on June 10, 1935 and they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. She survives him at home. He is also survived by his children and their spouses, June and Donald Lane of East Smithfield, Leroy and Barbara Smith of Frankfort, N.Y., and Lester Smith and his friend, Ali Langer of Rochester, N.Y.; his grandchildren, Valorie Mulcahy of Towanda, Martin and Diane Lane of Athens, Audrey and Mark Machalek of Rome, Daniel and Maggie Lane of Milan and Brian and Stacy Smith of Rome; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Guy and Rita Smith of Homoassassa, Fla.; a sister, Jane Smith of Troy; a sister-in-law, Georgianna Bailey of Athens; a brother-in-law, Albert Saxer of Elmira, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Sydney Smith of Elmira, and a sister, Ethel Smith Saxer of Elmira, N.Y. Family and friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Lowery Funeral Home, 225 S. Main St., Athens. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Jason Guillaume and the Rev. Lynn Ensign officiating. Burial will be in the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens. Memorial donations may be made to the Milan United Methodist Church, Milan, Pa. or the Mt. Pisgah Wesleyan Church, P.O. Box 10, East Smithfield, Pa. –Towanda Daily Review
