NANCY B. HARRELSON
Nancy Marie Bowling Harrelson (1927-2014) passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2014, after a long struggle with cardiac disease. Her family was by her side. Nancy was born in Baltimore, MD, and grew up in New York City and Atlanta with her parents, the late Raymond Walgrave Bowling and Esther Louise Wing Bowling, and her brother John Mitchell Bowling. Her father was an executive with The Coca-Cola Company. She graduated from the University of Georgia, where she was president of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. Following college, she attended the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City and worked there as a secretary until her marriage. Mutual friends introduced Nancy and George David Harrelson in New York City, and in 1952, she and George were married. They lived as a Navy family in various locations, including Rhode Island, Northern Virginia, Hawaii, Japan, California, and Key West, moving frequently while raising their four wonderful children. Following Captain Harrelson's retirement from the Navy in 1970, they lived in Kernersville, North Carolina, for several years, moved to New Orleans, and ultimately retired in sunny Gulf Breeze, Florida, to be near the water that they enjoyed so much. Nancy was a leader in each new community the family called home. She was a dedicated member of the League of Women Voters of New Orleans and the Retired Officers Wives and Widows Association (ROWW). She served as treasurer of the Gilmore Bayou Association and was a volunteer with the Pensacola Museum of Art. Duplicate bridge was her passion, and beginning in New Orleans, she left a trail of success all the way to Pensacola, Florida, where she proudly became Grand Life Master. Beautiful works of handmade needlepoint art envelop her home in the forms of pillows and decorative furniture. Nancy was an avid reader and crossword puzzle aficionado, voraciously reading three daily newspapers and working on the crosswords, usually before 9 am. One can always find gripping novels lingering around the house. In her later years, Nancy found happiness in her home, especially on holidays when her family would bustle around her as she created her next needlepoint pillow.Nancy had a close relationship with her children and four grandchildren. She will be remembered as generous, loving, culturally aware, social, elegant with an impeccable style and a keen wit, a formidable bridge player, an impressive Scrabble opponent, a dog lover, and always interested in her community and supportive of her family. Nancy was predeceased by her husband George in 1996, and their infant son John. She is survived by her children and their spouses Janne and Deborah of Silver Spring, Maryland; George Jr. and Laura of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Clay and Diane of New Orleans; and Paul and Erin of Washington, DC. She is also survived by her grandchildren David, Laura Marie, Lucy, and Alana Nancy. Other immediate family are her brother John of Gulf Breeze, and her nephew Mitchell of England. Their dog Hector will miss her every day.Services will be held on Monday, October 6, at the Mustin Beach Officers' Club on the Naval Air Station, Pensacola: 11:00-12:00 visitation; 12:00-1:00 memorial service; 1:00-1:15 procession to Barrancas National Cemetery; 1:15-2:00 committal at Barrancas. Family and friends are invited to return to the Officers' Club for a light lunch afterward. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nancy's honor to the Waterfront Rescue Mission, waterfrontmission.org, and to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, donate.nmcrs.org. The family gratefully acknowledges the assistance of the Trahan Family Funeral Home.
