Daryl Best, 67 of West Fargo, passed away on Friday, October 3, 2014 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fargo.
Daryl Avery Best was born on December 1, 1946 in Oakes, ND to Arthur and Gladys (Wickwire) Best. Daryl entered the US Navy in August 1964 and served on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt CVA-42. He was based in Mayport, FL, traveling to fourteen different countries during the Vietnam War. Daryl was honorably discharged from the US Navy in November 1967.
Upon his discharge, he moved to Minneapolis, MN and attended Brown Institute and received a degree in Radio Announcing. In 1970 he joined the Pipefitters Local Union 338 and was a licensed pipefitter/welder for 36 years. Daryl married Lora Jane Reiland in 1968. He married Janice Peters in 1978. They lived in Devils Lake, ND before moving to Zap, ND where he worked on the construction of the gasification plant in Beulah, ND. They moved to West Fargo in 1986. He retired in 2006.
Daryl was an active and life member of the West Fargo VFW Post 7564. He held many offices in the Post, including Post Commander, Cooties Seam Squirrel, State VFW Commander and Color Guard Commander. He was also a life member of the AMVETS. Over the years Daryl enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling Nascar races and especially his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter; parents; sister, Cleone Martin; his brothers, Richard Fiala and Larry Best and his nephew, Matthew Best.
Daryl is survived by his daughter, Sara (Mark) Guinan; his sons, Joseph (Maggie Vazquez) Best and Michael (Ashley) Best; four grandchildren; his best friend of 38 years, Janice and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan.
Memorial Service: Monday, October 6 at 2:00 pm at West Funeral Home in West Fargo with visitation from 1-2 pm.
Final Resting Place: North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.
