Thousands of Masons throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania will learn with regret of the death of George A. Briegel, who for many years had been tyler of the various lodges and commanders that meet in Masonic Temple, Adams avenue, this city.
Mr. Briegel was taken suddenly ill at the Temple about 7 o'clock Tuesday evening, just prior to the opening of Peter Williamson lodge, No. 323, F. and A.M. He was removed to his residence, 414 Vine street and a few minutes alter his family physician was at his bedside. After giving Mr. Briegel relief and leaving medicine to be administered during the night the physician left the house feeling quite sure that Mr. Briegel would be better by morning. About 5 o'clock the following morning the doctor was again summoned by Mrs. Briegel and found the patient to be sinking rapidly and his heart very weak. Everything possible was done to revive him but without avail as he died shortly after the doctor's arrival.
Mr. Briegel was a member of all the Masonic bodies in Scranton and took an active interest in all Masonic affairs being past master of Schiller Lodge No. 345, F. & A.M. of which he was secretary at the time of his death. He was also a member of Lackawanna Chapter No. 185, Scranton Council No. 44, Melita Commandery No. 68, Knights Templar, a Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Mason and a member of all the Keystone bodies in the valley of Scranton.
Funeral services will be held at the residence at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon and will be in charge of Schiller Lodge No. 345, F. & A.M. Mr. Briegel will be remembered by Masons in the various bodies as the Tyler at the outer door at all the Scottish Rite reunions and meetings of the various York Rite bodies. He had a wonderful memory for faces and his pleasant smile and warm grasp of the hand will be remembered by members of the fraternity for many years to come. Prior to his active work in Masonic circles which had taken his entire time of late years, including that of custodian of the Masonic temple, he had been in the painting business for many years. He was born in Germany 67 years ago and for the past 42 years had resided in Scranton. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and for many years had resided at 414 Vine street. Rev. J.C. Mattes will officiate at the services at the house. The deceased leaves his wife, Christina, a daughter, Mrs. C.A. Erickson, of Richfield Park, N.J., a son, George F. Briegel, of Whitestone, N.Y., a brother, John Briegel, of California, and two grandsons, Carl and Kenneth Erickson, of Richfield Park, N.J.
Rufus T. Strohm, eminent commander of Melita commandery, No. 68, Knights Templar, requests all Knights Templar, members of Melita and Coeur De Lion commanders, to meet at Masonic temple in full Knights Templar uniform at 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon for the purpose of attending the funeral.
