Nobel Prize Winning Physicist. He shared the Nobel Prize in Physics (with Frederick Reines) for his work in Lepton Physics. He is credited with discovering the Tau Lepton. Born Martin Lewis Perl, to parents of Russian and Polish Jewish descent, his father was a salesman, his mother was a secretary. He was an exceptional student and was advanced in reading. He graduated high school at the age of sixteen and while attending college, he joined the Merchant Marines during World War II. Following his return home, he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn. In 1955, he attained his PhD. in Nuclear physics from Columbia University. He went on to serve as a professor of Physics at the University of Michigan.
