Jerry Joseph Gagneau was born “Jeremiah Gagnon.” At some point in adulthood, he changed his name legally to Jerry Gagneau. He was a municipal judge in his home community of River Rouge, Michigan for many years. His wife, Edna was the cousin of his brother-in-law, Dewey Laginess.

Jerry and Edna were married on November 13th 1922 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in River Rouge. Edna was the widow of Francis Peter Valade with whom she had a son, Merle. Frank Valade died in 1921 when Merle was only 3 years old, and Jerry legally adopted the little boy but felt he should keep his father's name, so that the Valade surname could continue. Jerry and Edna had two more children; Elaine who married Donald St. Amant, and Rita who married Danny Sheehan.

Jerry and Edna were deeply devoted to each other and photos of the two in their old age clearly show that devotion. Jerry’s parents, most of his siblings, and their daughter, Elaine, are also buried at St. Charles Cemetery.
