Marriage license issued October 29, 1887 in Kingston, Tennessee for G. A. Gibson and Lilly Brown revealed they married on October 30, 1887 in Roane County, Tennessee.

Alfred was about twenty-one and Lilly was sixteen when they married.

The 1900 census of June 21, revealed Alfred was a farmer and they rented their farm in District 14, Roane County, Tennessee. Alfred was born in October 1860 and Lilly was born in May 1870. Alfred, Lilly and their parents were all born in Tennessee. They had been married fourteen years, had five children and five still living. Household members: Alfred Gipson (39), Lilly (30), Ben (12), Willie (9), Wilburn (5), Stella (4) and Maggie (2/12). Alfred's widowed mother lived two doors away.

The 1910 census of April 30, revealed Alfred was a farmer on his own account and owned their farm free of mortgage. They lived in District 1, Roane County, Tennessee. Alfred and his parents were born in Kentucky. Lilly and her parents were born in Georgia. They had been married twenty-two years, had eight children and eight still living.
