Funeral service for LTC (Retired) Darrell R. McGee, 81, Lawton, will be 1:30 p.m., Monday, October 6, 2014, in the Becker-Rabon Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Patrick Latham, Pastor, First Baptist Church officiating.
Colonel McGee died Wednesday, October 1, 2014, in Lawton.
Burial with full military honors will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family will greet friends from 2-4 pm Sunday, October 5, at the funeral home.
He was born at Buford, Texas, on February 3, 1933 and lived in the Colorado City and Loraine, Texas area until 1949 when the family moved to Wichita Falls, Texas. He went to work at Ford Motor Company and worked there until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953. He came to Fort Sill and was later sent to Fort Riley, Kansas, and then to Korea. He served in Korea, Japan and at Fort Lewis, Washington, where he decided to go to OCS and was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia. He was later stationed at Fort Bliss, Alison Air Force Base, Alaska, and then branch transferred to ordinance and moved to Ladd Air Force Base which became Fort Wainwright. He then served at Fort Hood, Texas, Aberdeen, Maryland, Fort Ruger, Hawaii and Fort Bliss, Texas, Vietnam and back to Fort Hood before going to Turkey and then returning to Fort Sill where he retired as a LTC.
His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 device, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal, Vietnam Ordinance Badge, Meritorious Service Medal, four Overseas Service Bars and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. He also earned the SPS Qualification Badge (Rifle) and the Expert Badge (Carbine) as well as the Expert Qualification Badge (Rifle M-16).
He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing at many of his assignments. Following his retirement he worked at Howard Smith Ford and then at Lawson Buick-Cadillac until his retirement in 1993. He then volunteered as a Red Cross worker at the Fort Sill Pharmacy. He joined the VFW and after working for the veterans he gave up fishing. He enjoyed working with and for his fellow veterans. He served the VFW as Post Commander, District Commander and State Commander. He was named “Mr. VFW” in 2012 for Oklahoma, which was a high honor for him. However, he was most proud of his work as War Commissioner, a position appointed by the Governor.
Darrell met the love of his life, Rothena Crow, in 1952 at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Wichita Falls, Texas, and they were married August 4, 1953.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a daughter and son in law, Darlyne and Randy LeFoll, Katy, Texas; a son and daughter in law, Raymond “Butch” and Denise McGee, Joshua, Texas; nine grandchildren and spouses, Jason LeFoll, Justin and Melissa LeFoll, Alexis and Dustin Thompson, Kristen and Ricky Meraz, Devine McGee, Annica McGee, Alanna McGee, Xaria McGee and Cody Nichols McGee; eight great grandchildren, Braden, Dahlen, Carsen, Dalten, Bailey Anne, Trey, Reese and Carter; two sisters, Patricia Sparks, Wichita Falls, Texas, and Dorothy Delong, Springtown, Texas.
