John J. Jaros, 79, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at his residence after a several months-long illness.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Revs. Kevin Richter and Michael Larkin officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
John was born May 12, 1934, in Spring Valley, Ill., the son of Anthony and Leona (Capello) Jaros. He was raised in Spring Valley and moved to Sioux City as a teenager. He then moved to Washington D.C., where he lived until he entered the service. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed in the Pacific Theater.
After his released from the service, he returned to Sioux City and married Helen R. Schulz on March 29, 1947, in South Sioux City. He was a truck driver for Bush Cleaners for many years and for American Mastercraft Cleaners. He retired from the cleaners in 1989. He then owed and operated a carpet cleaning business with his wife for many years out of their home.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and the American Legion Monahan Post 64. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. After his retirement, he loved working on small engines and repaired lawn mowers out of his home.
He is survived by his wife, Helen of Sioux City; two daughters, Nancy and her husband, Steve Vlach, of Dakota Dunes, S.D., and Kimberly West of Denver, Colo.; six grandchildren, Chris Fischer, Sarah Fischer, Jennifer Larkin, LeAnn Larkin, Nichole Larkin and Sean Larkin; a great-granddaughter, Araya Larkin; a son-in-law, Dennis Larkin; and a special friend, Calidor.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda S. Larkin; a brother, Anthony Jaros; and a sister, Leona Ferdig.
Pallbearers will be Chris Fischer, Sean Larkin, Manuel Schulz, William Schulz, Don Graham and Jerry Lewis.
A memorial had been established in his name for Hospice of Siouxland.
