C.. W. Charley Allen came to Oklahoma Territory in 1899 from Beloit, Kansas. He homesteaded on a farm southeast of Vici. When he first arrived, he lived in a dugout, but soon built a small house. After Charley became settled in his new home he returned to Kansas and married Dora Baker in 1900. They returned to their new home in Oklahoma. Three children were born to them: Ray in 1901, Hester in 1902, and Hazel in 1904. Pioneer life was very hard and Dora became ill and passed away in 1906 (we now know it was 1907), leaving Charley with three small children. In 1908 Charley married Grace DeArmond, a neighbor who was also widowed and had two little girls; Mabel born in 1900 and Fay in 1903.

Charley and Grace started their life together with five small children. In 1909 Claud was the first child born to Charley and Grace. Carl came next in 1910, Nettie in 1912, and Eva in 1914.

Charley and Grace with their nine children, worked and grew in their new surroundings. They acquired more land and built a new and bigger house on some of the new land for their growing family. All their children grew to adulthood on their farm 10 miles southeast of Vici. When Ray married, he lived on Charley’s original homestead. Ray kept this arm until his death in 1953.

Charley was active in community affairs and served on the Parry School Board for many years. Charley believed in progress. He installed carbide lights in his home as soon as they were available. The first radio they had was one with earphones, so everyone had to take turns listening. The family’s first victorola was one that had to be cranked by hand. Charley also built one of the first silos for feed storage, and this structure still stands on the place now owned by Nigel Parry.

Charley Allen remained on his farm until his death in 1936. Many of his children left Vici during the dust bowl and depression. Grace Allen died in 1952 and three of his children have also passed away: Ray in 1952 (correction 1953), Hester in 1937, and Eva in 1963.
