John "Jack" was the son of Alvis Abe and Maggie Lett Sloan. He was the grandson of Civil War Veteran Second Lieutenant and whiskey dealer John Morris Sloan, 1836-1890, and Nancy Catherine Kelly, 1834-1920.

He was the eighth child born out of nine children. His siblings are, in order of age: Ernest Jackson Sr. b: 1900; William Talpher b: 1904; Tressie Evelyn b: 1906; John Quint b: 1909; Wilma Catherine b: 1912; Annie Mae b: 1914; Jesse K b: 1916; Grace Virginia b: 1919.

Jack married Emma Geneva Way in 1945 in Lee County. Emma was the daughter of James Edgar and Etta "Ettie" Jane Caddell Way. To this union was born one child, Gloria Elaine.
