Stanley Earl Porter, (Stan) passed away at his home in Los Alamitos, California on Friday October 9, 2009 of prostate cancer. He was 81 years old.

Stan was born in Long Beach, California on May 25, 1928 and attended local schools. He graduated from Pomona College in 1950, earned his Teacher’s Credential in 1951 and his Master’s Degree in music from Occidental College.

In the summer of 1949, Stan’s life changed forever when he met Lorraine De Haan who was vacationing in Long Beach. This began a 60 year relationship with Pella that lasted until Stan’s last trip to Pella in August, 2009. Although not an official citizen, many people knew Stan from his many involvements in the Pella community which ranged from being guest soloist at various churches, singing at band concerts in the summer, and being an honorary member of the Rotary Club.

Stan served his beloved country from 1951-1953 during the Korean War. He was a Military Training Officer and directed the Air Force Cadet Glee Club, attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

On June 19, 1953 Stan married his sweetheart, Lorraine De Haan in Pella, Iowa. Together they lovingly raised three children: Stanley Earl, Jr., Lianne Lorraine and Alicia Janine. Stan, Jr., married to Wendy Swanson is president of McMaster Divinity College in Canada. Lianne lives in Pella, Iowa and is married to Ruben Mejia. Their three children are Vincent, Cassidy and Brennan. Alicia is a Marriage and Family Therapist and resides in Arcadia, CA.

Stan taught for 8 years at Bellflower High School, then retired from Cerritos Community College after 28 years. He was the director of choral music and taught various music classes. He also directed the music at numerous churches including Methodist, Lutheran, Nazarene and Evangelical Free.

Stan enjoyed travelling and took his family on trips to Europe, one lasting 5 months. He also worked as a travel agent for 10 years. Stan was a true patriot who loved his country and defended the freedoms of the Constitution. He dedicated his life to the Lord and shared his faith and love for Jesus with others. He was well known for his positive attitude and ever cheerful smile.
