Paul was the son of Clifford Clarence Hanks and Mattie B. McBride. The family was well known in western Illinois as the owners and operators of several funeral homes.

Paul attended school in Pearl, Illinois and graduated from high school in 1937. He graduated from Blackburn College in 1939, and the University of Illinois in 1941.

He served in the United States military during World War II. He enlisted on 29 Jul 1942 in Peoria, Illinois and was in the army until he received his discharge in 1945.

Paul married Loretta Mack on 11 Sep 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri. They were the parents of 2 children.

Paul graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in 1946. He joined his father in the family business, the C. C. Hanks Funeral Home and Ambulance Service. His wife, Loretta, worked along side him for many years. He retired in 1985.

Paul also raised Red Poll cattle.

He was a member of the reserves after World War II and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He served from 1951 to 1952. His wife ran the funeral parlor while he was in the service.

Paul was very involved in a wide variety of organizations over the years. He was a member of American Legion Post #636. He served on the Bank of Calhoun County Board of Directors, the Calhoun County Health Department, and the Calhoun County Fair Board.

Education was an important part of Paul's life. He served on the Calhoun Community Unit District #40 School Board, the Lewis and Clark Community College Board of Directors, and the Lewis and Clark Foundation Board. He was a member of the Golden Eagle Society of Lewis and Clark Foundation, and the State Community College Board.

Business interests included membership in the American Red Poll Association, and the Illinois Funeral Directors Association.

Paul was a member of Indian Church of Christ in Hamburg, Illinois.

In his free time, Paul was a sports enthusiast and supporter. He was described as being an "AVID" Cardinal baseball fan. He attended all Calhoun High School sporting events until his health began to decline.

Paul died in the emergency room at Jersey Community Hospital. At the time of his death, he was 95 years, 2 months and 16 days old.

He was survived by 2 daughters, (Living) Ricks of Wimberley, Texas, and (Living) Carpenter of Normal, Illinois; 2 sons-in-law; 4 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta; 2 sisters, Eula Hanks and Eutha Grimes; and 1 son-in-law, Paul L. Schobernd, Jr..

Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. on 03 Oct 2014 at Hanks-Gress Funeral Home in Hardin. Funeral services were conducted at Indian Creek Church of Christ in Hamburg, Illinois at 10 a.m. the following morning. Paul was buried with full military rites next to his wife, Loretta, who passed away in 2011.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the Calhoun County Historical Society Building Fund, the Lewis and Clark Foundation, the Calhoun High School Athletic Fund, or to the Calhoun Ambulance Service in lieu of flowers.
