Joe Robert Sims
Oct. 20, 1933 - Nov. 5, 2014 age 81 of Pinson, passed peacefully at his home on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 in Pinson surrounded by his loved ones. The oldest of four children, Joe was born on October 20, 1933. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Grover Sims and Leola Higginbotham Sims; his sister, Nancy Sims Bassett; and his wife of sixty years, Dorothy Hall Sims. He is survived by his sisters, Sarah Sims Hayes and Betsy Lardent Waldrop (James); four children, Joanne Sims Dinsmore (Wilson), Stanley Robert Sims (Nancy), Jeffrey Lamar Sims, and Steven Lewis Sims (Lisa); nine grandchildren, Brian Lee Johnson, Andrea Sims MacMillan, Jarred Robert Sims, Amanda Leigh Dinsmore, Emilee Anne Dinsmore, Jacob Howard Sims, Nicolas Stephen Sims, John Daniel Sims, and Olivia Carol Sims; and five great-grandchildren. Joe attended Mortimer Jordan High School, where he graduated as valedictorian, and married the love of his life, Dorothy in 1953. Joe was a skillful carpenter, building houses throughout the southeast, but his passions extended well beyond his work. He was a devout Christian, active in his local church and supportive of missions throughout the world. He also had a deep love of geology and nature, known for his collections of arrowheads and his extensive knowledge of plants and animals. However, his greatest passion was his family. His love for his wife, Dot, knew no bounds. Joe will be missed by his family and friends. Services will be held at Ridout's Trussville Chapel on Sunday, November 9, 2014 with visitation from 1-2 and service at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society or your favorite environmental organization.
