Sylvia Joyce Laird was born on June 20, 1931 to Tunis and Alice Rouw Goemaat at Lacey, Iowa. She died Tuesday, September 14, 2004 at the age of 73 years. She graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1951.

She worked at Mercy Clinic in Oskaloosa where she met Halbert (Hal) Laird whom she married on June 20, 1952.

Sylvia grew up on a farm near Leighton where she enjoyed hunting and fishing with her father. She was a drum majorette in high school. She enjoyed animals and adopted many strays.

Sylvia was a devoted mother who loved talking about her sons and their accomplishments. She was proud to be a mother and housewife and worked on the farm where she and her husband resided most of their lives.

After Hal`s death in 1998, Sylvia traveled around the area meeting with friends. In the past few years she enjoyed spending time with her companion Norman Proffitt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and step-mother Rachel Goemaat.

She is survived by two sons, Avon Michael (wife Victoria) of Oskaloosa and Joseph Craig (wife Cindy) of Knoxville, brother Alvin Goemaat of Leighton, sisters Edna Van Ee and Donna De Jong both of Pella, 6 grandchildren, 4 step-grand children, 3 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
