Mr. Robert McCreless "Mac" Oates

Robert McCreless “Mac” Oates, a resident of Abbeville and formerly Headland died Monday, September 29, 2014 at Henry County Health and Rehab. He was 88.

Memorial services for Mr. Oates will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to; the Headland United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 103 King Street, Headland, AL 36345 or the American Cancer Society, ATTN: Carol Sloan, 134 Quarles Court, Ozark, AL 36360.

Mr. Oates was born January 8, 1926 to the late Walter Bragg Oates, Sr. and Mamie Solomon Oates. He grew up in Headland and graduated from Headland High, joined the United States Navy and served in World War II. After the war, he started his career with Northwest Airlines and later retired after 40 plus years. Mr. Oates attended Auburn University. Mr. Oates was a member of Headland United Methodist Church, two term City Councilman, served on the Water Board, Henry County Historical Society and Friends of Landmark Park. He was a charter member of the Headland Country Club and the Porch House Coffee Club. Mr. Oates also enjoyed flying, playing golf and was an avid Auburn Tiger supporter.

Mr. Oates is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Jean Armstrong Oates and his in-laws, Cullen Lawton and Jewel Hasty Armstrong.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan Oates Morgan, Hoover, Julie Oates, Headland; grandson, Matthew Robert Morgan, Panama City Beach, FL and a special nephew, Hank Stroup, Pawleys Island, SC.
