Cornish parents Samuel Cappel [1819-1843], a miner and Ann Dunstone [1820-1903].

He was born in Phillack, Redruth and later lived in Roseworthy. His father died in May 1843, 8 days after their first wedding anniversary.

Anne remarried in 1845 and Samuel gained some half-siblings,

At age 22 he migrated to South Australia for the mining on the ship Clara that departed Plymouth 4th Feb 1865. It was an 85 day voyage, landing in Adelaide in 1st May 1865. Philipa Waters (1839 – 1910) was a passenger on that ship so the romance may have developed on board. They married within the month at St Pauls, Adelaide, South Australia on 29th May 1865.

In the late 1870s they moved to Clunes with their young family for the gold mines.

He was buried at the Clunes Cemetery on 21 June 1881, age 38.
