Martha Elizabeth "Marbeth" Applegate, 74, of La Grange, died Wednesday, September 6, 2000, at her home.

She was born on May 30, 1926, in Slemp, Perry County, Kentucky, the daughter of Rev. Jessie Rufus Peters and Cordelia Holcomb.

She was the former Martha Elizabeth "Marbeth" Peters; a native of Slade; an Oldham County schoolteacher who retired after 30 years, having taught first grade at La Grange Elementary School for 24 years; a former member of Christian Women's Club in La-Grange; and a member of the National and Kentucky Education associations, Oldham County Teachers Association, International Reading Association, and La Grange Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Allen Applegate; a son, David Applegate; daughters Elizabeth A. Applegate, Kathleen L. Lutz, Margaret Brockman, Patricia Louise Osbourne, and Mary Ellen Kinser; sisters Geneva Turner and Patsy Hensley; eleven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, at Arch L. Heady Radcliffe Funeral Home, La Grange. Burial will be in Valley of Rest Cemetery, La Grange. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
