Obituary:
John Spencer DeSpain was born in Benton County, Missouri January 20, 1869 and departed this life April 22, 1950 in the Beaver hospital at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 2 days.

He came to this country and homesteaded on a farm north of Gate in the year 1901. Two years later, he was married to Sarah Berends. They ran a Lodging house and Livery Barn, as was called in those days, to assist the weary traveler on his way to Englewood and back. John has always had a desire like that to help someone. He and his family moved to Gate in 1920 and has made this his home ever since.

He was a man who loved his home and children. You never visited him but what he would mention them. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, and eight children. Two died in infancy. The surviving are Emmitt DeSpain of Rocky Comfort, Missouri, Lena Beason of Sherman, Texas, Ora DeSpain of Straight, Oklahoma, Clifford DeSpain of Laverne, Oklahoma, Neomia Ruggles of Florence, California, Opal Beard of Knowles, Oklahoma, John DeSpain of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Zona Gale Compton of Beaver, Oklahoma, twenty-one grandchildren, one great grandchild, and a host of relatives and friends.

He was a member of the Mason and Odd Fellow Lodge. On August 21, 1917, he united with the Methodist Church. In recent months, he has been reclaimed in Christian Faith and his testimony was that he was ready to die. He planned his own funeral. The service was conducted by Rev. C. W. Nelson, assisted by the Nazarene Minister of Knowles. He was buried in the Gate cemetery. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
