Charles Fred Bottomley, 33, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 1983, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, where he had been hospitalized since Sunday. Born in Lafayette, he lived in West Lafayette most of his life. A graduate of West Lafayette High School, he received a journalism degree from the University of Missouri in 1971. In 1972, he was married to Linda A. Kienker, in St. Louis, MO; she survives.

Mr. Bottomley lived in Brisbane, Australia from 1973-1975. He was founder, owner and publisher of the Sports Spirit newspaper from 1978-1981. More recently he was a salesman for Wick Buildings. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, the Sertoma Club, and Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He also was active in youth work at the Salvation Army.

Surviving with his wife are three daughters, Vanessa, Ellen and Meara, all at home; his parents, H. William and Frances Bottomley of West Lafayette; and a sister, Marilynn (Mrs. James R.) Dammon of rural West Lafayette.
